Yaz vs Yasmin

yaz vs yasminYaz (Lorynya) and Yasmin are two fairly new but very popular birth control pills. How do you know which one is right for you? What exactly is the difference? Why do doctors push one more than the other and why do different doctors push different ones? Here are some facts about Yaz vs Yasmin.

Deciding on the right birth control is no easy task, especially when you’re busy with school, family or work. Ideally you want to pill that’s going to be the most effective, the least hassle and has the least side effects however some pills do come with added benefits so why not make a more informed choice and get the absolute most out of whatever pill you decide to take. Makes sense, right?

Yaz and Yasmin are pretty similar and they are both made by Bayer in Germany.

“¢ Both Yaz and Yasmin are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly.
“¢ Both Yaz and Yasmin work to prevent pregnancy by stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs and thickening the cervical mucus so the egg cannot be fertilized by the sperm, even after the egg has finally been released.
“¢ The possible side effects of both Yaz and Yasmin are very similar. The most common being migraines/headaches, cramping and nausea. More serious side effects like blood clots can occur though (not too dissimilar to other birth control pills)
“¢ Some reports say that you have more chance of experiencing severe side effects when using Yaz over Yasmin.
“¢ Yaz is also known as Lorynya depending on what country you are in or are buying from.
“¢ Yasmin is also known as Ocella and Yasminelle depending on what country you are in or are buying from.

OK, so the names are different”¦”¦ it’s trivial as many medication names differ depending on what country you are in. Manufacturers like to confuse things by calling drug different names in different countries even though they are the same products made by the same Pharma companies, often on the same plants. Is that all there is to Yaz vs Yasmin?

“¢ Yaz is a combined birth control pill that contains the hormones Ethinylestradiol 0.02mg and Drospirenone 3mg.
“¢ Yasmin is also a combined birth control pill but it contains the hormones Ethinylestradiol 0.03mg and Drospirenone 3mg.
“¢ The synthetic progestin Drospirenone used in both Yaz and Yasmin is different from the Progestins used in other combination pills. It has the same mechanism of action but allows smaller doses to be effective.
“¢ Yaz gives 24 active pills with a 4 day break between monthly strips
“¢ Yasmin gives 21 active pills with a 7 day break between monthly strips

Now, we’re getting to see the difference in Yaz vs Yasmin. The main difference between the two birth controls is down to 0.01mg of Ethinylestradiol. Ethinylestradiol is the Estrogen hormone found in many birth control pills. Many doctors prefer giving a lower dose of Estrogen to women of reproductive age as some cancers feed on estrogens so the best course pf action is to dispense the pill with the lowest effective estrogen dose.

Along with the actual lower dosage per tablet, using Yasmin over Yaz means that the body gets an extra 3 days break each month from the added hormones. The monthly strips of Yaz include 24 active pills compared to Yasmin which only contains 21 active pills. So on Yaz you have 4 days break between strips and on Yasmin you have a 7 day break between strips.

While that sounds like a trivial amount of hormone difference, it can make all the difference to why the pill is being used, the added benefit and the risks of side effects. Both Yaz and Yasmin are commonly used as birth control pills although Yaz is more predominantly prescribed for other indications as well.
